Can you just turn up at a sake brewery? How much does it cost, and how long does it take? The answers are scattered across hundreds of Japanese-language brewery websites. So we read them: every brewery in our database, one by one, and counted the 253 that say they accept visitors. Every number below comes from that count.
What we looked at: of the 1,751 sake breweries in Terroir HUB, the 253 whose own website (or their prefectural brewers' association) states that visitors are accepted. Checked between 2026-07-12 and 2026-07-25. The source URL and check date for each brewery are on the brewery visit pages.
Do you need to book? 175 of 253 say yes

Booking is the norm. 94 breweries have a booking page on their own website; the rest take reservations by phone, email or a form — often in Japanese only. If your Japanese is limited, the 27 breweries with English tours or materials are the safest starting point.

How far ahead to book
20 breweries put a deadline in writing, expressed as “N days before”: 2 days (5), 3 days (6), 5 days (4), 7 days (5). Most of the rest simply say “by reservation”. 181 breweries run tours at fixed start times, 23 state a capacity limit, and 100 list closing days — so same-day visits are often not possible.
What it costs — 79 are free, median ¥850
147 breweries state a price, and 79 of those include 無料 (free) — usually breweries with a museum or exhibition hall attached. Among the 96 breweries that give a figure (counting the cheapest course where several exist):

The median is ¥850, from ¥50 to ¥7,000. The expensive end buys a tasting of limited releases or a tour led by a brewer. Note that “the tour is free but tasting costs extra” is a common arrangement, so read each brewery's own wording.

How long it takes
117 breweries state a duration. Among the 44 written as a plain “about N minutes”, the median is 40 minutes. Others break it down (“20 minutes in the brewery plus 20 minutes tasting”) or give a range by course. Add time for the shop: 162 breweries have one on site.
Tasting and driving
Japan has a zero-tolerance drink-driving law, and breweries say so plainly: 30 state that anyone driving cannot taste, and 25 state that under-20s cannot drink. If you would rather travel by train, 81 breweries are within 1 km of a station in a straight line — coordinates come from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, so the walking distance will be longer.

Breweries with a museum
20 breweries run a visitor facility with “museum” or “memorial hall” in its name — 8 of them free. These are the most reliable option if you are travelling outside the brewing season or with a group, because they do not depend on the production schedule.

- We started from all 1,751 sake breweries in Terroir HUB and kept the 253 whose own website (or their prefectural brewers' association) states that visits are accepted.
- Booking, price, duration, tasting and English support were recorded only where the official site says so. Nothing was inferred; missing details are counted as “not stated”, not guessed.
- Every brewery's source URL and check date are stored and shown on the site. These checks were made between 2026-07-12 and 2026-07-25.
- Opening arrangements change. Confirm with the brewery before you travel.
