Since 1918 — 長野原町, Gunma
Gunma's westernmost sake brewery, where 'Asama toji' work through winters that drop below minus ten.
Asama Shuzo, founded in 1918, brews in the town of Naganohara, said to be the westernmost sake brewery in Gunma Prefecture. Winters here are severe, with temperatures dropping below minus ten degrees Celsius, and the sake is made by locally trained brewers known as Asama toji. The brewery runs its own roadside stop, the Asama Sakagura Tourist Center, where visitors can buy sake straight from the kura and eat at an attached restaurant.
