Japan's northernmost sake brewery, on the snowmelt of Mt. Shokanbetsu.
Kunimare Shuzo, founded in 1882 in the herring port of Mashike, is the northernmost sake brewery in Japan. It brews with subsoil water of Mt. Shokanbetsu and Hokkaido-grown rice — from the famously dry Hokkai Onikoroshi, now past its 40th anniversary, to a junmai daiginjo of Yamada Nishiki polished to 35%. Tours by reservation; the shop opens year-round except the New Year holidays.
