Asahikawa's other centenarian brewery, its 'Kokushi Musou' named for an unrivalled hand in mah-jong.
Takasago Shuzo has brewed in Asahikawa since 1899, building its reputation on Kokushi Musou, 'peerless hero,' a name borrowed from a rare, prize-winning hand in mah-jong. The brewery also develops products from its own sake lees, extending the cellar's output beyond the bottle. At its Meiji Sakagura direct-sale shop, visitors can join a reserved, Japanese-language tour, two sessions a day, ten people each, booked at least five days ahead, though tastings are offered only to groups, not individual visitors. Its Junmai Daiginjo is milled from Hokkaido's Suisei rice to 45%.
