Hand-pressed sake from 1735, in the family that gave the poet Hakushu his sister.
Kikubijin Shuzo was founded in 1735 in what is now Miyama, Fukuoka. Its sake is pressed not by machine but by hand — drip pressing and traditional fune pressing — so that the rice's umami shows through a clean, clear taste. The sixth-generation head's wife was the elder sister of the poet Kitahara Hakushu, who inscribed the brewery's name. Its KAMURI has taken IWC Gold two years running, and the kura opens to the public at its annual sakagura-biraki festival with free shuttle buses.
