The Takehara birthplace of Nikka Whisky's founder, brewing bold kimoto and yamahai sake since 1733.
Founded in 1733 in Takehara, Hiroshima, Taketsuru Shuzo is the ancestral home of Taketsuru Masataka, who went on to found Nikka Whisky. The brewery favors the traditional kimoto and yamahai starter methods, producing a robust, richly flavored sake with a firm acidity that comes into its own when warmed. It stands within Takehara's preserved old townscape district, about a 15-minute walk from JR Takehara Station; visitors can view the exterior of the historic kura.
