A Tanba brewery named by a haiku master, whose registered heritage buildings now host sake tastings, grappa and an inn of its own.
Founded in 1849 in Tanba, Hyogo, Nishiyama Shuzojo brews its signature Kotsuzumi label, a name given to it by the haiku poet Takahama Kyoshi. Its main building, wall and Sanzan-an teahouse are registered as tangible cultural properties, reflecting a history that stretches back to around 1891. Beyond sake, the brewery has branched into grappa, liqueurs and sweets, and runs its own inn, Koden — a small hospitality business built around the brewery itself.
