A Kurashiki mirin house that became an Okayama sake brewery in 1921 — its wartime kura still standing.
Manzai Shuzo traces back to 1896, when its founder opened a mirin distillery in Kurashiki's Tamashima district; his successor began brewing sake at the present Okayama City site in 1921. The kura survived the 1945 air raids that leveled much of the city, and that same building still serves as the shikomi-gura, the brewing hall, today. Okayama's long sunshine and fertile plains have long been called 'Kibi sake country,' and the flagship Satsuki Kokoro carries the founder's wish for a sake as clear and heart-lifting as a fine May sky.
