Since 1928 — 三宅村, Tokyo
A Miyakejima shochu house that survived a full-island volcanic evacuation and returned to distill barley shochu mellowed with rice koji.
Founded in 1928 as Ikegaya Shuzo, this Miyakejima brewery was forced into a complete evacuation of the island by the 2000 eruption; the evacuation order lifted in 2005, and a new factory built in 2008 prompted the current name, Miyake Island Shuzo. In its small facility, rice is washed by hand and koji made in-house. Unlike the shochu of other Izu Seven Islands, its barley shochu is brewed with rice koji, giving it a distinctively mellow character.
Otsu-rui shochu — 25% ABV, barley and rice koji, 700ml
