Sakata's only city-center kura, formed from five merged breweries in 1946, prized for its versatility with rice.
Sakata Shuzo was formed in 1946 when five breweries merged, making it the only kura left in central Sakata, Yamagata. Its Jokigen label is known for the brewer's range: the lineup moves confidently between rice varieties such as Koiomachi, Shinriki, Senbonnishiki and Yamada Nishiki, each bringing its own character to the sake. That versatility has been rewarded widely, with a gold medal at the National New Sake Awards and a platinum prize at Kura Master among its honors.
