A Kamogawa brewery said to trace back to a mountain ascetic's shirozake, still supplying Meiji Shrine's harvest rites each year.
Kameda Shuzo, in Kamogawa on the Boso Peninsula, is said to have begun during the Horeki era (1751-1763), when a traveling yamabushi mountain ascetic first brewed shirozake, a sweet, thick white sake, here — a history the brewery has carried for more than 260 years. Since 1981, it has supplied shirozake for the Niiname-sai harvest festival at Tokyo's Meiji Shrine. Its flagship, Jumangame, has gone on to collect recent honors including a gold at the 2025 International Wine Challenge and the top gold at Monde Selection 2024.
