One of Sawara's two surviving kura, founded by a brewer trained in the family of the mapmaker Ino Tadataka.
Tokun Shuzo was founded in 1825 in Sawara, the canal town of old Shimosa province. Its founder trained in brewing at the Ino family — the house that produced Ino Tadataka, maker of Japan's first surveyed map. Of the 35 breweries Sawara once held, Tokun is one of only two still brewing. The kura has taken seventeen gold medals at the Annual Japan Sake Awards, with the great Nanbu toji Tsuneo Oikawa long at its helm; it even makes sake-lees cosmetics. Tours by reservation.
