Since 1909 — 熊本市, Kumamoto
The Kumamoto lab whose house yeast became Japan's Kyokai No. 9, now brewed nationwide.
Established in 1909 to raise the quality of Kumamoto's sake, this research brewery brought in Kinichi Nojiro as its first chief engineer in 1919. In 1968, the yeast native to its own kura was distributed nationwide as Kyokai (Brewing Society) No. 9 yeast, now used by breweries across Japan. Its flagship brand, Kohro, was trademarked in 1920.
