A Hitoyoshi shochu house whose roots trace to a 9th-century move from Kyoto, and whose 1994 blend won Monde Selection gold.
Torikai traces its roots to the Torikai family's move from Kyoto to Hitoyoshi in the 9th century, and the family began brewing liquor and shochu here in 1800. The present brewery, founded in 1903, sits in a valley in Hitoyoshi's Nanokamachi. In 1994 it completed Ginka Torikai, a rice shochu built on ginjo-grade koji milled to 58% and a house-cultivated yeast, which went on to win the Grande Medaille d'Or at the 1996 Monde Selection.
