A Misato brewery, once a metal merchant to the Date clan, still brewing in the century-old kimoto-yamahai style.
Kawakei Shoten was founded in 1902 by Kawana Keiji in Wakuya, Miyagi, later relocating — along with its own rice paddies — to what is now Misato town. The family had previously served as metal merchants to the Date lords of Wakuya domain. The kura has kept to kimoto-style yamahai brewing since its founding, and its Koganesawa Junmai Daiginjo has won consecutive gold medals at Japan's National New Sake Awards since 2004.
