Since 1924 — 壱岐市, Nagasaki
An Iki Island shochu house that revived sake brewing after 30 years — and promptly won Kyushu's first Sake-1 Grand Prix.
Omoya Shuzo was founded in 1924 on Iki Island, Nagasaki, regarded as the birthplace of mugi (barley) shochu, and built its name on the shochu Chingu. Sake production paused in 1990, but in 2018 the brewery built a dedicated sake kura, Yokoyama Gura, and resumed brewing sake on Iki for the first time in roughly 30 years. Its Junmai Ginjo Yokoyama, made with Iki-grown Yamada Nishiki and the island's mineral-rich water, carries a wine-like, floral aroma — and in 2024 it won the Sake-1 Grand Prix, the first Kyushu sake to take the title.
