A Nara brewery whose 1964 bottled taruzake was Japan's first — and which now brews both sake and craft beer at its own Brew Park.
Founded in 1923 in Koryo, Nara, Nakagami Shuzo brews under the motto "shodo mukyukyoku" — a path of ascension without end. In 1964 the brewery created what is believed to be Japan's first bottled taruzake, sake aged in barrels of Yoshino cedar, a style it still produces today under the Choryo brand. Beyond sake, Choryo also brews its own craft beer and runs Choryo Brew Park, a hands-on facility where visitors can walk through the brewing process firsthand.
