Facing Iwakuni's Kintai Bridge — one of Japan's three great arched bridges — Sakai Shuzo takes its name and label, Gokyo ("Five Bridges"), from its five soaring spans. Founded in 1871, the kura holds fast to a simple creed: do the ordinary things properly, with local rice, water and people. Brewing water drawn from the Nishiki River's underground flow accounts for roughly four-fifths of the finished sake, and the Otsu toji tradition still guides the craft alongside newer, more experimental lines like Five and Mizuchi. The flagship Junmai Daiginjo won gold at the International Sake Challenge 2025.
