Snow-country brewing inside Akita's first registered cultural property kura.
Ryozeki was founded in 1874 in Yuzawa, deep in Akita's snow country. Its main house and four inner storehouses were the first in the prefecture to be registered as National Tangible Cultural Properties — and they are still working brewery buildings today. Under the creed of wajo ryoshu (harmony brews good sake), the house joins traditional technique with new methods, using the severe cold of Yuzawa winters for its brewing. Its labels include the junmai daiginjo Setsugekka and the acclaimed Hanamura series. Tours are currently suspended.
