Since 1830 — 由利本荘市, Akita
A Yurihonjo brewery drawing centuries-old snowmelt from Mt. Chokai and its own contract-grown sake rice.
Founded in 1830 at the foot of Mt. Chokai in Yurihonjo, Akita, Tenju Shuzo brews with spring water fed by the mountain's perennial snows, held at a steady 7°C year-round. Since founding the Tenju Sake Rice Research Society in 1983, the brewery has worked with contract farmers to grow its own Sakekomachi and Miyamanishiki rice. Weekday tours run about an hour, by reservation up to a week ahead, and include a paid tasting of about 1,000 yen with a sake cup and bottled brewing water to take home.
