STORY

The Story of 吾妻嶺酒造店

Iwate Azumamine was formally established in 1854, though its story reaches back further: to the 1670s, when an Omi merchant opened the 'Gonbee Sakaya' in what is now Shiwa town, said by tradition to date to 1684 and long regarded as Iwate's oldest kura — the brewery credited with giving rise to the Nanbu toji guild. It remains a brothers' brewery, the elder serving as kuramoto (owner) and the younger as toji (master brewer). Since the autumn 2018 season the house has brewed only junmai-grade sake, keeping annual output capped at roughly 30,000 bottles (1.8-liter equivalent).
