Kyoto city's oldest sake house, revived in 2009 to brew all four seasons from a 40-tsubo room on the ground floor of an apartment block.
Matsui Shuzo, founded in 1726, is the oldest sake brewery within the city of Kyoto, set among the thirty-six peaks of Higashiyama beside the Kamo River. After a period of dormancy, the fifteenth-generation owner revived brewing in 2009, working from a roughly 40-tsubo (132-square-meter) space on the ground floor of an apartment building. The kura now brews year-round across all four seasons, producing about 300 koku (54,000 liters) a year.
