Oyabe's only sake kura, named Hokuichi — 'be the best in Hokuriku' — by its nineteenth-generation owner.
Kuroda Shuzo, founded in 1908, is the only sake brewery in Oyabe, Toyama. The family originally farmed rice locally before turning to brewing as a side trade, and it has kept its founding name ever since. The flagship label, Hokuichi, was named by the 19th-generation head of the family, Jiroemon Kuroda, who wished the sake to be 'the best in Hokuriku' — Hokuriku ichi, shortened to Hokuichi. The kura continues to brew with rice and water sourced from its own local area.
