A 1765 Koriyama sake house that now distills award-winning whisky at its own Asaka Distillery.
Sasanokawa Shuzo has operated in Koriyama, Fukushima, since 1765, growing into a comprehensive alcohol producer spanning sake, shochu, whisky, spirits and liqueurs. Alongside its sake labels, including Sasanokawa, the company opened Asaka Distillery in 2016 to make whisky under the Yamazakura name, which has gone on to win gold at the Tokyo Whisky & Spirits Competition. Free tours of the distillery run Wednesday afternoons by reservation, with a paid premium tour offered monthly.
Junmai Ginjo — Fukushima-grown Fukunokou rice, polished to 58%, ABV 15%
Daiginjo — Hyogo-grown Yamada Nishiki, polished to 40%, ABV 16%
