The Story of 澄川酒造場

Founded in 1921 in Hagi, Yamaguchi, Sumikawa Shuzojo passed to its fourth-generation owner, Yoshifumi Sumikawa, in 2004. A 2013 flood devastated the kura, but more than 1,500 local residents helped rebuild it within a year. Toyobijin, the flagship brand, is designed to welcome newcomers to sake with a floral, fruity profile built on the rice, water, people and time of Hagi. That approachability has carried it onto the world stage — as the official sake of the 2010 FIFA World Cup and the toast at a 2016 Japan-Russia summit dinner.
