A Kitakata brewery that has resisted mass production since 1818 — and once won over a U.S. president with its junmai ginjo.
Sasamasamune Shuzo has brewed in Kitakata, Fukushima, since 1818, holding to old-fashioned methods and turning away from excessive modernization or mass production. The house began making junmai sake in 1977, and at the 1979 Tokyo Summit, U.S. President Jimmy Carter reportedly enjoyed its junmai ginjo — a moment the brewery still points to with pride. Today it continues to send fragrant, easy-drinking sake out from the same Kitakata soil.
