Sapporo, Otaru & Asahikawa — Hokkaido

Hokkaido Sake Trail — Museums and Kura Across the Northern Frontier

From Sapporo's sake museum to canal-side Otaru and brewing hub Asahikawa — a rail-linked trail across snow country.

Cool summers and abundant snowmelt have made Hokkaido one of Japan's fastest-rising sake regions — increasingly for its own local rice, too. In Sapporo, Nihonseishu's Chitosetsuru Sake Museum pours brewery-only bottles right in the city; in canal-town Otaru, Tanaka Shuzo's Kikko-gura opens its working brewery free of charge, every day of the year. Inland in Asahikawa, Otokoyama runs the free brewing museum at OTOKOYAMA SAKE PARK, while Takasago Shuzo offers reserved tours and its Meiji-gura shop. Range further and the rewards grow: Kunimare in Mashike, known as Japan's northernmost sake brewery, and Kamikawa Taisetsu's Hekiun-gura, brewing on a university campus in Obihiro. Distances are big — and so are the personalities.

FAQ

Do I need a reservation?
Tanaka Shuzo's Kikko-gura, the Chitosetsuru Sake Museum and OTOKOYAMA SAKE PARK welcome walk-ins. Takasago Shuzo's factory tour must be booked at least 5 days ahead. Check each brewery card for official details.
Can I visit in winter?
Major facilities stay open year-round, but Hokkaido winters can disrupt transport with snow. Check train status and opening hours before setting out — winter is also peak brewing season.
Is this doable without a car?
The main breweries in Sapporo, Otaru and Asahikawa are reachable on foot or by bus from stations. For Mashike, Kuriyama or Obihiro, a rental car is realistic — designate a driver if you plan to taste.
