Deep-snow Hida, at the foot of the Northern Alps, has everything cold-weather brewing wants: crisp winters and mountain spring water. Along Takayama's preserved Kamisannomachi street, Harada, Funasaka and Hirata cluster within a few minutes' walk — coin-server tastings, a kura bar, shopfronts under cedar sugidama balls. Hirata Shuzojo's small-group brewery tour runs with English support, a rarity welcome to overseas travelers. In white-walled Hida-Furukawa, Kaba Shuzo and Watanabe Shuzoten face each other across the old quarter, with free tastings and premium pours by coin server. South toward Gero Onsen, Tenryo Shuzo offers a doburoku brewing experience and Okuhida Shuzo receives visitors by reservation; in Gifu city, Nihonizumi runs free reserved tours one minute on foot from JR Gifu Station. Few places connect hot springs, old streets and sake this gracefully.

Day 1 evening — Miyagawa morning-market street and the old town; stay in Takayama
Day 2 morning — ~15 min on the JR Takayama line to Hida-Furukawa: Kaba Shuzo (tours weekdays, booked a week ahead) and Watanabe Shuzoten's shop
Day 2 afternoon — south toward Gero Onsen: Tenryo's doburoku experience (online booking) or a reserved visit at Okuhida Shuzo (2+ people)

Getting There
About 2 h 30 min from Nagoya to Takayama by Hida limited express. Takayama–Hida-Furukawa is ~15 min; Takayama–Gero ~45 min. Nihonizumi in Gifu city is one minute from JR Gifu Station.

- Do I need a reservation?
- Shopfront tastings in Takayama and the Furukawa shops take walk-ins. Hirata's tour, Kaba Shuzo's visits (a week ahead), Tenryo's doburoku experience and Nihonizumi's tour all require booking. Check each brewery card for official details.
- Are English tours available?
- Hirata Shuzojo's brewery tour advertises English support. Most other breweries operate in Japanese only — a translation app helps.
- Is winter a good time?
- Yes — winter is peak brewing season and the snowbound old streets are at their finest. Note some visits are seasonal: Kaba Shuzo tours run roughly May–September and Hirano pauses November–March, so check ahead.
